In May 1991 a group of members from Putnoe (now Goldington) Evangelical Church who lived in various North Beds villages began to meet each week for prayer and fellowship in Sharnbrook. During subsequent months they held barbecues and a short series of evangelistic meetings in the village and were encouraged by the response.
It wasn’t the first time that a group of evangelical believers had met in the village with the idea of forming a church. However, previous “incarnations” had not had the backing of an already established church and had come to nothing. With the encouragement of the Putnoe church, Sharnbrook Evangelical Fellowship (as the church was originally named) was formally constituted as a church on May 10th 1992. The new church was made up of folk from the locality who had been travelling into Putnoe, as well as people from the earlier “new-church” attempts plus others who had been reached through events such as the barbecues, evangelistic meetings and the regular Sunday meetings.
The church became established with Colin Richards, who had been the leader at Putnoe, as the full-time leader. Colin was succeeded by Tim Ford who was pastor of the church for 7 years. During this time the church changed its name to Sharnbrook Evangelical Church and became affiliated to the Evangelical Alliance whilst maintaining its historical connections with Goldington Evangelical Church (and Kempston Evangelical Church – now Grace Community Church).
Tim Ford left in 2005, since when the church has been seeking another full-time pastor. Since 2006, three interim elders have been assisting the church in this process and providing overall leadership. The three are Martyn Hallett (pastor of Goldington Evangelical Church, Bedford), Ian Rees (Associate Pastor, Brixworth Christian Fellowship) and Phil Walter Pastor, Brixworth Christian Fellowship).
